More than a coach: celebrating Corio’s Role Model of the Year

Some of you may know me as CCW’s Marketing Manager, but outside of work, I’m also Secretary at Corio Soccer Club. It’s a role that lets me see firsthand how much time, care and effort people put into our local sporting community.

On Saturday evening, those two parts of my life came together when I had the privilege of representing CCW at Corio Soccer Club’s annual Presentation Night. One particularly special moment was celebrating Boban Lazovic, this year’s recipient of the Community Chapman Welsh Role Model of the Year Award.

Proudly sponsored by CCW, the award recognises a club member who has made a meaningful impact on developing players through their example, encouragement and contribution to the club. Having known Boban personally for a number of years, I was especially pleased to see his efforts recognised.

From team manager to coach

I first knew Boban as a team manager, supporting his team and helping things run behind the scenes. When the opportunity came for him to step into coaching, he was reluctant. Not because he didn’t care, but because he wasn’t sure he was capable.

Over the past two years, he has shown just how much he had to offer.

Watching Boban grow into the role, and seeing the way his players have grown alongside him, has been incredibly rewarding. He has helped shape an outstanding group of young people and footballers, giving them the encouragement and guidance to develop together as a team.

A season to be proud of

This season, Boban’s team finished second in their league before going on to win the grand final. It was a fantastic result and a well-earned reward for the work they had put in together.

But what has stood out to me over the past two years is the group they have become along the way.

Junior sport gives children opportunities to build confidence, learn to work together and understand what it means to support their teammates. Coaches play such an important part in that experience, and Boban’s influence has been clear to see.

For someone who initially doubted whether he could coach, he has plenty to be proud of.

Recognising the people behind the club

As Secretary, I see how much local clubs depend on people who give their time and energy to others. Presentation Night is an opportunity to celebrate the results, but also to recognise the people whose contribution carries well beyond the scoreboard.

That is what makes this award, and CCW’s support of it, meaningful to me. It celebrates the people helping young players grow, both as footballers and as individuals.

Congratulations, Boban, on being named the Community Chapman Welsh Role Model of the Year. Having watched your journey from team manager to coach, I’m so pleased to see you recognised for the difference you have made.

And congratulations to your team on a brilliant season and a grand final win to remember.
